Tixati doesn't close stays in memory, new instances would not run, the first instance cannot be killed have to restart (Windows 7 Professional x64)
by Guest on 2018/07/15 07:13:47 AM
I have also noticed this since a few days. Also on Windows 7 x64. Can't kill it from task manager and can't start a new instance. Only a reboot of Windows will kill it.

Same here since most recent update, Win7 64x also.
Running from shortcut will produce multiple instances in Processes, but no window.

Installed previous version over the top of the newest version, no change.

Uninstall, reinstall latest version, back to square one, have to reboot to run properly again after closing window.

Hello!
I entered this forum for the first time just to say that this heppens to me since a few days.
I close Tixati but the process is still running. Cannot be close. I have to restart.
Windows 7 ultimate. 64bit.

The process is 22mb.
If I try to run Tixati again it never start. A new tixati process is running along with the froxen one. This new process is 4mb.

I hope you solve this. Is something new. Never seen before on my pc.

is everyone using tixati v2.58? i notice everyone reporting this problem is running win7.

if you install v2.57 (or any older version) does it still not want to close?

was this problem present before anyone upgraded?

I reported this behavior to the feedback email a few days ago.
Task Manager can't "end process"
TaskInfo "Terminate" fails
Command line "taskkill" fails.
OS has to reboot to clear memory and allow a restart
During one test, I was able to manually run error reporter and it was sent.
We had a discussion about it in Tix Dev Talk on fopnu.

After my earlier post (second post in this topic) I realized that it started after Windows installed the latest updates and decided to check if uninstalling them would fix the problem. After some testing it appears that the problem was solved when I uninstalled the monthly update (KB4338818). So it appears that this update is the cause of the problem.

Hi again.
I'm the guy of the message on 2018/07/15 06:02:10 PM

Today I installed Tixati 2.58. Same problem of 2.57 on Windows 7 64bit.

The process cannot be terminated. I have to reboot to remove it.
And while the frozen process is there I cannot run Tixati again.

Never happen till a few days ago. Probably one update of windows 7 cause the problem.

How can I solve it?

re: KB4338818

could this "known issue" be related????:

When an administrator tries to stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC), the W3SVC remains in a "stopping" state, but cannot fully stop or be restarted.

Currently, there is no workaround for this issue.
Microsoft is working on a resolution and estimates a solution will be available mid-July.

I'm the guy of the last message again.
I confirm that removing the update KB4338818 Tixati is working perfectly again!
Thank you to the user who discovered this.
I hope that update wasn't so important.
by Guest on 2018/07/18 02:02:13 PM
I can also confirm it, KB4338818 was the culprit...
Thanks a lot... Bugmagnet

Thanks Bugmagnet it worked!
by Bugmagnet on 2018/07/19 06:03:49 AM
don't thank me, thank Guest who discovered it and posted about it 2018/07/16 11:32:08 PM  and thank all y'all who confirmed that removing that update cured this issue.

After they found the problem, I just looked up Microsoft's comments about that patch, to see how important it was and then noticed that they reported "known issues" with it, one of which seemed to correlate with this Tixati issue.

If so, MS claims it will have their bug fixed very soon. We'll see.

My workaround is to just leave Tixati running as long as possible anyway...and since turning off all logging helps that, I am not to overly concerned about having to reboot now and then. I can remember what it was like before "resume" downloads was possible, when if you lost connection you had to start all over. So this is trivial in the big picture and if M$ keeps it word and fixes this before the month ends, I'm happy.
by Bugmagnet on 2018/07/19 04:06:09 PM
It seems M$ has fixed that bug. Yesterday they released an "optional" update for it.

2018-07 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4338821)

"This non-security update includes improvements and fixes that were a part of KB4338818 (released July 10, 2018) and also includes these new quality improvements as a preview of the next Monthly Rollup update:

   ***
Addresses an issue that occurs when an administrator tries to stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC). The W3SVC remains in a "stopping" state, but cannot fully stop or it cannot be restarted."

I just tested this on one of my win7 pro systems and after added this update (without removing KB4338818) Tixati stopped cleanly on exit.

My point of view:
Sitting behind a Windows Vista x32 with Tixati 2.58.
Now and then I have the same problem, but have to unplug
the power cord to get back - no restart or power down is
possible.

As my OS is Vista... (not receiving updates anymore) I'm
not sure that a curtain KB is the culprit ?? But I dont know.

As I recall, the same problem existed with Tixati 2.57.

Just for info... thanks :-)

Following up on Bugmagnet's last post above, you can also solve the problem by installing the stand-alone patch:

Keep Tixati, I mean portable version, on RAM disk, and things will be very fast. Very helpful trick.

In addition writing/reading to config files goes superb.

Windows 8.1 and Tixati 2.58 and having the same issue here.

Windows 8.1 and Tixati 2.58 and having the same issue here.

did you recently get any windows updates?

does it happen if you run tixati v2.57?
by Guest on 2018/07/24 06:26:25 PM
My bad, I didn't notice the thread had multiple pages until just now.
I've downloaded the relevant update for Windows 8.1[1] and I assume that will resolve my issue.
If not, I'll return and complain again.
