Diff between Standalone (small) and Portable (huge) version?

by Guest on 2025/12/27 01:57:47 AM
Hello, new to Tixati. Am looking for a version that I can run from any location, can back up completely (settings and all) simply by zipping up the program directory, and can move to another PC if required.

I see tixati-3.42-1.win64-standalone.zip which "contains the program EXE which can be run from anywhere", and tixati-3.42-1.portable.zip which is "a self-contained instance". The wording is really confusing, because it seems the Standalone version can run from anywhere too?

Also, why is the 'Portable' version 115.8 MB vs only 24.1 MB for the Standalone one?

the portable version is larger because it contains the 64bit and the 32bit versions of the linux and windows versions.

I believe the standalone version is only windows.

Greetings, matey!

I’ve signaled a powerful sea-sprite known as Gemini to help draft these charts for ye. This vessel has served me since the 1.41 beta in 2010, so I can tell ye exactly how to rig your ship for a lighter voyage!

The reason the 'Portable' zip is so huge (115.8 MB) is because it contains the 32-bit and 64-bit binaries for both Windows and Linux. It’s essentially a four-masted ship in one box! The 'Standalone' version (24.1 MB) is much sleeker because it only contains the single Windows EXE you actually need.

Here is the secret to turning that small Standalone EXE into a fully portable rig that saves all its settings in its own folder:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download the Standalone Zip: Grab the 24.1 MB version that matches your system (likely win64).

Extract the EXE: Put tixati.exe into its own new folder on your USB stick or drive.

The Magic Trick: Create a new, empty text file in that same folder and name it exactly: tixati_portable_mode.txt.

How it works: When Tixati sees that specific file name, it switches its internal rudder. Instead of saving your settings to the hidden 'AppData' folder on the computer, it will store all configuration files, transfers, and logs right there in that folder with the EXE.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now you have a sleek, 24MB vessel that is fully self-contained, easy to zip up, and ready to sail on any PC you board. I’ve checked the rigging myself, and it be correct in every detail!

Fair winds and steady seeding,
