Clearnet Peers Dominate I2P in Mixed Mode

by Guest on 2025/09/16 08:47:43 AM
In mixed mode, clearnet peers often dominate I2P peers, unless the clearnet peers leave the swarm. This imbalance hinders the seamless transfer of torrents, which is expected in a properly functioning mixed mode setup. Ideally, clearnet and I2P should establish separate tunnels to connect with their respective peers, ensuring optimized upload and download speeds by leveraging both networks independently.

Please check about it. Thanks.

This issue still persists. I have close to 100 torrents all are mixed mode. With Mixed Mode max speed I was getting was close to 2 MB/s - with very less torrents seeding for I2P network, even though there are atlest 25 peers and across torrents and I am the sole seeder in all cases. When I2P-Only mode is turned ON for all torrents then the speed is close to 600 KB/s, which means during Mixed Mode I2P peers are throttled and given preference over the normal torrent traffic peers.

As you can see in the attached image = (link removed by Mod and sent to Devs)
Clearnet peers completely overpower and dethrones I2P peers in Mixed Mode.

Even Tixati I2P to Tixati I2P is suffering from this issue as shown in images above.

One should note that I2P is a high latency network. There are long round trip times (typically 12 hops, each might go to the other end of the world, so speed of light is a real limiter here) and many tunnels are so slow that leechers get only some KBps.

You could try limiting clearnet traffic only. I have a wireguard connection solely for torrenting and I use:

tc qdisc add dev wg0 root tbf rate 1mbit burst 32kbit latency 400ms

i put that as PostUp in wg0.conf,

3-4 KB/s is slow even for I2P standards. I've been using I2P since a decade and I know what's torrenting speed should and should not be. I2P has shown remarkable improvement since 2020. Even on the slowest torrents it reaches atleast 30 KB/s quite easily. So, yes there is some big problem going on and that's why I'm reporting it.

Thanks for taking the time to let me know about this.

I can re-create this now, and I see what you mean.  I'm not sure exactly why it goes imbalanced like that, but I'm going to do some more experiments and get it figured out, hopefully for next release.  I might have to add kind of proportioning control, but if I'm lucky there will be a simpler solution than that.
