I would like to seed a torrent

by Guest on 2025/02/13 11:16:29 AM
Hello,
I would like to seed a torrent, but all I have are the files for the torrent and the magnet link for the torrent.  I do NOT actually have the torrent file itself.  Tixati keeps saying "Fetching meta-info...".  What can I do to be able to seed these files?  Thanks for any and all help.

Check any description of how magnet links work.

You only have a short identifier for a torrent (infohash). A client looks up for peers with the same infohash in distributed database (DHT), then connects to them to get the rest of the torrent metadata (list of files, hashes of content pieces). If there are no peers (or you can't connect to them because of restrictive NAT on both sides, or firewalls or address filters), you can't get that data, and don't know what exactly should be in the torrent.

There are some options, and you can try all of them at once.

— Search for your infohash on sites that cache public torrent files or other offline databases people compiled.
— Leave your torrent client running as much as you can for weeks or months to try to catch some old seeder that can connect to you.
— Make a new torrent in your client from the same files, and try to match piece size and file order to get the same infohash. Depending on luck, it might be easy, or might not be possible unless you know which version of which client made the torrent originally. Can be automated if you understand the inner workings.
— Search for similar torrents with the same file(s) that are more popular, and seed them. Files can be renamed, so check the byte sizes. If it's the same file, you can point your client to your copy even though the name is different. Multiple torrents can use a single source file that way, there's no need to have multiple copies of the same data.

Note that if someone copied infohash (or magnet) of a torrent file with a private flag, getting it from DHT won't work at all, because other regular clients only use specific tracker(s) to find peers.

If nothing is successful, you can also make a new torrent with those files, and upload it to some relevant catalogue.
