Magnet link - Error on metada

by brunosmm on 2013/08/08 07:25:12 PM
Hi everyone,

I try to download a magnet link from a private tracker(no DHT activated).
The torrent get the peers, but didnt get the metada.
If you enter on the peers and see the status for every peer was:
metadata xfer not supported

I want to understand what is that, someone can help me?

I try another magnet link foe the same website and go normaly and fast.

Thanks in advance.

I think magnet links shouldn't be used on a private tracker. All torrents on a private site will have the private "flag" set. This means a bittorrent program is not allowed to use DHT, PEX and LPD with this torrent. It is allowed to get peers only through the tracker. Although it isn't specified in magnet link protocol extension, some popular bittorrent programs won't send info dictionary (the torrent meta data) when the "private" flag is set. This is the reason why you get "metadata xfer not supported" status. Download torrent files instead of using magnet links on a private site.

Most likely you was lucky with the other magnet link that worked OK. Some bittorrent programs do send meta data for private torrents (Tixati included) and in my opinion, it is the correct way to handle magnet links.

I tried to download a torrent using a magnet link and got the same message from other peers on the torrent. Metadata transfer not supported. After reading this help page I downloaded the torrent file instead to my downloads folder and clicked on it. Now I was
able to connect with other peers on the torrent and begin downloading the files.

@Guest If you can't get a torrent from the same website as the magnet link you can reverse lookup the magnet link's hash.

Right-click the stuck torrent and go to "Properties".

Then go to the "Options" tab at the top of the properties window.

Then on the sidebar click on the "Meta-Info" button.

Click the copy button for something that looks like:
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:agczv3r04ufdbxksul57yhrzctfokrsr

Then open Notepad or some other text editor and change the copied text...
From:
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:agczv3r04ufdbxksul57yhrzctfokrsr

To:
agczv3r04ufdbxksul57yhrzctfokrsr

Then search online for the hash. It might or might not reveal another torrent website.

You can also try a torrent search engine that doesn't host any torrent files but Google and Bing aren't exactly listing torrent results on the first or fifth pages. So try a few of the many search engines.

You can also try using quotes for the torrent's title to see if a search engine will show you duplicate entries as some sites just copy/paste torrents or people might be uploading the same torrent to multiple sites.

There are apparently some sites that will convert the magnet link to torrents for you however I presume that the torrent must actually be active for that to work:

magnet2torrent.com

webtor.io/magnet-to-ddl

Just keep in mind that there are probably hundreds of thousands of torrents if not millions or even more. Plus if one or even multiple torrent websites/trackers are taken down it won't matter if someone is still seeding it. They might somehow see no one has bothered to download a torrent and stopped/removed it from their client. So the older and more miscellaneous a torrent is the lower the chances that you'll be able to download it in full or even part. Just keep that in mind and if all else fails: there are more torrents than you could ever download in your life, find something else.

Good luck!
