What does the lock icon mean?

by Guest on 2013/07/31 10:20:42 AM
In the transfers view there is a lock icon on a few torrents.  What is this?

It's known as a "private torrent". Basically it only gets peers from the trackers, no DHT and no PEX allowed.

Just add some regular trackers to the mix on those torrents and you're good to go.  It's one of many lame and ineffective features of the antiquated bittorrent protocol.

How do you add trackers?

Select a torrent, go to the Trackers tab, right click on empty space, use "Edit Trackers...".

Ok, and THEN what?

Really then what? Add the tracker address. If you really meant to ask - where do I find these tracker addresses? Not allowed to post those addresses here. A search of the net with keywords like public tracker list or open tracker.

I would not add any trackers unless you really know what you are doing because allot of the lists are generated by people who want to track you, for all the wrong reasons. One for instance is a tracker with exodus in it. They got caught selling info to copyright trolls and got banned on many public torrent sites. So they started posting and torrenting public lists that include themselves and other good sites.
If your torrent has a lock then don't add because there is a reason for the lock which is usually privacy.

Lastly unless someone else adds the tracker you added it is pointless. If you are the only one registered on that tracker for that torrent; then who is the tracker going to send the info too?

And then there is this other thing, Tixati won't start downloading these "locked" torrents, as it mentions "failing to connect to proxy".
Vuze seems to has no problem downloading these torrents.

'Really?' Really? You couldn’t just start with the second question? Ugly, man. Ugly.

As for Tixati won't dl 'em 'cause they're locked: we got 16 of 'em, 11 of 'em complete and playable, right now.

From what we"ve read, (ref: by sizzors on 2013/07/31 04:25:56 AM, this thread) “It's known as a "private torrent". Basically it only gets peers from the trackers, no DHT and no PEX allowed.

How much of that is true we’re not certain. The no DHT part is true in our case. A much more likely and, frankly, sensible reason is to limit the files to members of the particular organization offering the files. Yes, they may be able to offer them through other torrent sites, but most won’t do that unless driven by some other factor(s).

I think is better add to Tixati option to ignore idiot Private Flag by default, so, to force DHT
