As no one has posted on this bug/quirk that I can find...

If the user name list goes blank (as does happen not in-frequently) for some as yet unknown reason, a simple workaround to restore the list is to grab the vertical scroll button on the nick list, move it to the bottom, then move it back to the top. In most cases the list of users will again be visible.
