Migrate Tixati to a new hard disk

by loninappleton on 2016/03/28 07:19:10 PM
I have one folder for torrents and content files plus the
Tixati program folder in Programs.

Is there anything more to transferring these two folders
than a copy and paste?  In other words, does Tixati write other info elsewhere that would be lost in my scratch install?

Firefox and Thunderbird Mozilla programs have the Mozbackup program which saves configurations for retrieval.  I wondered if any of that was necessary.

Tixati configuration files are stored inside %appdata%\tixati folder (paste to explorer path). You can copy this folder or use the Import/Export function in Tixati Settings. I think the first method is better but it's a good idea to Export all settings anyway, as a backup.

Ok,  I'll be working with a scratch disk with just the OS on it to practice.

I'm back and still struggling with this profile if that's what it is.

I looked for the path to appdata using one of the screens  at metadata where roaming and whatnot are shown.

Please be more specific with a step by step procedure for those like me who don't know all the ins and outs of where Win7 stores things.  Screen shots are also helpful.

This may be related to my more recent question on Tx 2.34
not finding the torrent and content folder.

I began the process of the only thing that seems to work:
dragging each torrent file to the transfer window.  It's tedious but will allow me to get the new build and disk going.

Continuing to try and solve my problem, this thread addresses the issue from 2013

http://forum.tixati.com/support/144/

But the path is still not well described: put everything in C: or put everything in Tixati folder.  I have no idea.

Also ran into an error when using the Export to a file feature which is recommended for  safety and security.

It reads:

Error exporting Config to file access is denied opening
(my other hard drive) f:\  and the file name is backup-2016-04-15-04-14.tixati.config.temp

I can't get the exported temp file to show up anywhere.

Hello I'll try to help you the best as I can.

If you are not comfortable with copying Tixati's settings folder manually, you should use the Import/Export function. The error you've got most likely means, that you have tried to save the .tixaticonfig file to a place where you don't have write permission. Try saving the file to the Desktop instead.

In your other topic: https://forum.tixati.com/support/2451/  you have written that Tixati doesn't find .torrent metadata files. This is because Tixati needs .torrent file only once when adding new torrent to the transfers list. Then it stores metadata in it's own settings files (with .dat extension) within %appdata%\tixati folder.

Of course, when migrating to new system, you have to keep the same paths to downloaded content, in other words you have to copy your tixatidownloads folder to the same place as it was on the old system. Disk letter also has to be the same otherwise Tixati won't find already downloaded files. I assume you have already copied your tixatidownloads folder.

Try following steps:
1. stop all transfers in Tixati
2. go to Settings > Import/Export > Export Configuration To File
3. select all settings
4. save .tixaticonfig file to the Desktop
5. copy .tixaticonfig file to the new system's Desktop
6. install fresh Tixati on the new system
7. start Tixati, go to Settings > Import/Export > Import Configuration From File
8. point to the .tixaticonfig file on the Desktop
9. select all settings
10. Tixati should restart with old configuration and transfers list

This method should work but if you'd like to try copying %appdata%\tixati folder manually, just write I'll try to help. I don't use Windows on my home computer any more. Currently my only operating system is Ubuntu Linux.

Thanks for the detailed help.  I'll read through carefully tomorrow.

Just to follow up on a couple things:  I did try to copy the file to a place other than F;, but it still failed.  And I saw no way to go to administrator function when the
error occurs.

Also is it possible that there is -- how to say-- an error
in the extension name-- too many periods or something? Can it be renamed without so many characters?

Yes, these two problems are related.  I will do your procedure but at the same time, may use the manual method just to make some progress on this install.

The Export Import feature, if running smoothly, should handle any of this like Mozbackup for the Mozilla tools.  Why is it not the same as manually copying an app data folder?

Thanks Pete.   I'll do what I can with the instructions.

Hello, pete's advice is spot on, i have to add that you should use the portable version of tixati instead so you wont have problems next time.
by Guest on 2016/04/17 10:44:30 PM
An interesting tip from Guest.  I can certainly use a portable version since my usage is not in any way complicated.  But one thing at a time.

I had this very same question and today I've migrated Tixati and all data torrents from one HDD to another prior formatting. I did as follows If this helps you out. I'd no problem just the long time checking large files.

1.- Do a folder in desktop named TORRENTS or something you choose.
2.- Go to your usual Tixati and select all torrents you want to save, then hit the second click of your mouse and go to "share", then "save .torrent", then browse the folder you previously created and save them there.
3.- Download portables version of Tixati and place it unzipped to a safe HDD you won't erase its content (from which you will now manage your torrents).
4.- Now, in your old Tixati, search for the folder containing the incomplete pieces of your torrents, you can find it under "Files" in the "Settings" tab of the program. Once located, copy/cut all its content to the according portable version of Tixatis incomplete pieces folder in the very same unzipped file you first downloaded, which is named "incomplete-pieces".
5.- Done that, open Tixati portable, hit add below the "Home" button in the up left corner of the program, browse your firstly created torrents folder, select all files it contains and then hit "open".
This will load all of your torrents and, after the proper checking, they will stay exactly in the progress they were left in the old Tixati of yours.
You can now start Tixati from the migrated HDD you chose in the first place, and safely erase the data of your old HDD.
Also, personalize the new set up Tixati as you had your previous one.

Have a good day!

Very complete but I work pretty slowly on instructions.
Since I haven't opened the portable program yet, will it take an export and import command in the tools area of the program?

I will follow up on this and report any success.

Just one more thing on this.

I'm confused by which version of Tixati loads.  I have 2.34
on the new install.  I also have downloaded the portable to a folder.  Opening the application appears to just go to
the 2.34 install which is working fine-- and I adjusted the
portforward option as well.

I may have to download portable again to satisfy myself of how it works.
by loninappleton on 2016/05/04 12:27:52 AM
This confusion will have to wait for some other session with the new Tixati install.  My efforts to get Tixati 2.38 portable version installed seem to call my previous full install of 2.34.

In other words, from the unzipped folder made today I select the Tixati 64 application and it opens the previously installed (and fully working with the torrent files) 2.34.

It's working on the new HD well and good.  But this portable business is confusing.  I will review the printed instructions given for any clues.

Could I leverage the information in this thread to "Convert" from or "Migrate all torrents" to Tixati Portable

My key issue is making sure all my as is"existing -absolute- torrent paths" can be correctly translated/ edited to the TO BE "relative portable torrent paths" that I move the Folders and Files into.

from OP

Be my guest to continue the topic to portable.
However I cannot be much help myself.
