Won't start even after reinstall (or portable)

I'm having problem that baffles me.   If I run (cli line) or click on Tixati the Hard Disc blinks a little and nothing happens.  There are no error messages on the command line.  I've put clean versions on the machine and tried the portable version.

When I tried setting up magnet links I got this error.  This is maybe a clue?

gconftool-2 --set --type=string /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/magnet/command 'tixati "%s"'
Error setting value: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/  for information. (Details -  2: IOR file '/tmp/gconfd-root/lock/ior' not opened successfully, no gconfd located: No such file or directory)

With one other exception everything is working fine.
For whatever its worth Thunderbird was starting up and freezing.  I Killed it (HTOP) and when I restarted thunderbird worked. Once its been Killed once thunderbird runs fine.
