Suggestion: temporary extension to file names while downloading

by Guest on 2013/08/01 04:32:02 AM
I have installed Tixati to a couple of friends, who unknowingly thought some files were complete when they closed the program.

Most download managers and other BitTorrent clients add a temporary extension to the original filename, and only remove once it's finished 100%

Could you include an option in the settings for the user to choose?
by Bugmagnet on 2013/08/01 08:09:26 AM
tixati has the option of using 2 folders, one for incomplete files and another folder to mofe the finished file to. So all a user needs to be aware of is that files in the IN folder are not done.

I have checked all over the menu and can find no option of selecting a directory for unfinished files.
I did see a directory for pieces, but that is no help separating complete /incomplete files.
If this really exists, where is it?
Just to be clear, I do know files can be moved to another directory when the torrent is finished,
but an unfinished torrent, with complete and incomplete files, is really a task to separate.
I have a torrent with nearly 1500 files. Half of them are not and probably never will be finished.
I will have to manually check each and every file to the Tixati record, select and move.
Can you even begin to imagine how long this is going to take?

I am not understanding the need to do this so am curious about that. What is to be gained by seperating finished and unfinished files into separate folders?

If you are going to keep the torrent active, either tixati would have to be modified to keep track of the additional file locations or seeding will be hampered.

If a temp extention is added to unfinished files, then using those files becomes a problem. i.e. I have several videos at 99%. I can play them in VLC with some minor skips due to missing data, but it does play.  If the filename extention gets changed, the application link gets broken which would then require manually loading the file into VLC.

That is such a simple task. Go to the layout button and choose sortable view. Click the files tab then find status and click that. The files will be sorted by % completed. Highlight the first one that is 100% go to the last one that is 100% hold the shift key and click. So now all your 100% files are highlighted, simply right click on the group, choose location and move them where ever you want.

This may work good. I will try it. Thanks.
Still I do not know why others think it is not important.
Take PDFs for instance. They will not work as partial files.
So why keep them?
Sure SOME videos will run incomplete, but unless they are marked, you do not know which files are damaged, in the case you can dl another better copy.
Adding an extension is still the best option.
Next best, and maybe better in some cases, is to move the individual files as they are finished, instead of waiting for the entire torrent to NEVER finish.
In my case with this particular torrent, the files are in multiple directories and will still require a lot of hands on work.
For example, even if I can move the files in mass, as you suggested, I still have to manually create the directories to move them into.
And I can only move one directory at a time.

Something did occur to me, that would speed this up.
Select all the UNFINISHED files. move them to a junk directory and delete them.
The files and the directory structure is left intact. NO manual making directories.
Still, have to go directory by directory to get rid of them.

Bugmagnet, when I was using utorrent, I simply pointed the .!ut extension to VLC player.
It plays and there is no question about the file quality.

One extra comment.
I just recently moved to Tixati from utorrent.
Utorrent was getting to be a big hassle, although it is the only client I have used, and know it pretty well.
Finally I realized I had to ditch it.
Excepting the extension problem, this program has been great for me.

My bad.  What Sailor24 said...

You can move the completed files that way using tixati and it will remember where to look for the finished files as you continue to seed them.

Bugmagnet, Thanks for the extra info. Good to know I can move them and keep them seeding.

as to moving the empty/incomplete files to junk and deleting them...

since they are either empty or incomplete, they would usually take up little or no space... also...don't give up hope. I have found that in some admittedly rare occasions, orphaned torrents will finish when the right person comes online or restarts seeding an abandoned torrent. I have dozens of seedless torrents in various states of completion, from 0 tp 99%, many over a year old but I let them ride and sometimes am surprised when one finishes.

Given the very transient nature of torrents, it seems they have a very short half-life of about a month. For that reason, I choose to share the rare and try to make torrents a more reliable resource.

i for one hope tixati does NOT make having file extensions the default. i like it the way it is. an option that you have to turn on is ok, but not default.

This would be great to have. One use case is for example when downloading a torrent containing many videos. Plex will try to index everything with the correct extension to be included in the movie library, and this would prevent it from indexing anything that isn't completely downloaded yet.

Moving on complete doesn't really solve this as Tixati will move the contents only when everything is downloaded. It won't move individual files as they complete.

I vote for temp file extensions too. Or at least the option to turn them on.
by Guest on 2015/12/13 04:00:06 PM
Yes. Please add option for temp extensions.
It is the biggest item MISSING compared to uTorrent.
And the first thing I couldn't find in the setup.
Why is this so hard?

Another for this feature please.

Another vote for the incomplete files to have different extensions.

I don't quite understand why you would want to put the real extension on the file when it is still only partially downloaded.  If an MP3 is only partially downloaded then it is not a MP3 yet.  Surely it is only really a legit MP3 once the whole file is on the hard disk?

I am in the hunt for a new client to replace uTorrent.  So am pretty new to Tixati, but it ticks many boxes (like not being written in Java)

+1 for option to set specific extension for non-completed files. Even temporary files can be stored in specific directory, when there are many files, it's not easy to recognize, which are finished (and can be played by player), and which are just partial. I guess it's simple feature to implement.

Thank you in advance to consider it.

I vote for: optional additional extension for incomplete files.

For me it could be by default, but making it optional should have everyone agree on this feature.

I'd like to thank the developers for their high-quality work!

This feature is already available, see in Settings > Transfers > Files > Incomplete file name format.
