Tixati 2.12 Proxy Issues (Workaround) Sticky

by Les4191 on 2015/05/24 08:46:23 PM
If you want additions or removals, just ask me.

Objective: How to get proxy services such as TorGuard or BTGuard to work with Tixati.

Issue: After entering the proxy settings, all connections with torrent will give a "Failed to connect to Proxy"  or “Connection Failed” message. No torrent will be able to download. After hours of research, I tried all of the settings. I know it is not me since my settings work with other torrent clients.

Solution: The integrated proxy for Tixati does not work well, so you need to use third party proxfier program. I have included screenshots for the network settings as well. Maybe this can be addressed in a future update.

My method includes
Proxy redirect through a proxifier.
Encrypted Connections only
TCP ONLY
Disabled DHT
IP Blocklists
Increased Torrent Privacy with Slower Torrent Downloads (You can't have it all)

Via Wikipedia
A proxifier is a software program which can make other programs pass through a proxy server by intercepting and modifying their network requests. This article compares a selection of popular proxifiers.

List of proxifier programs

These are the list of proxy programs you can choose from (mix of paid and free) Since there are no free ones that are actively being updated, at least within a year. That is why I am using Proxy Cap. Costs $30 dollars, but it is the best proxifier and is updated regularly. People have touted increase stability with the paid proxifiers, but I have never used the free ones so...meh

Let's get started:
Proxy Cap Instructions for TorGuard and Tixati
I will make others if I have requests.

Your public IP address and IP for Tixati must be different. If not, then it is not working. Post your settings and do not show your IP addresses.

Cons:  I noticed some crashing when importing some torrent files or messing around the settings while proxy cap was on. However, I find this to be a minor con. I have all my setting set already so I just leave the program alone. Also, some other users have complained of this and they do not use proxies, so it could be a coincidence.

This guide is not as extensive as a https://vpnreviewer.com/secure-torrent-downloads

They talk about IP and DNS leaks, setting firewall rules to block torrents when VPN is not connected. I find those configurations to be more secure, but I think it is overboard. My method only connects to encrypted clients, TCP only, disabled DHT, IP block-lists, and redirects through a proxifier.  So even if the proxifier leaks sometimes, the other settings are still working.

Conclusion

I did all of this because I could not get the proxy settings in Tixati to work. So maybe this can be looked into for the next release or include a note in the settings that the functionality may not work with all proxies. If anyone has every gotten a proxy to work with Tixati then please include a post with a settings description.

BackStory:
I love Tixati so much that I would even donate if there was an option. The IP Filter support is the best I have seen in any torrent client. It is the main reason I went to the lengths of doing all this.  I have been searching the forums and the internet for hours for a solution. All other postings ended in "Use another torrent client", "Use a VPN service", or "Test the port settings".  I usually do not start postings, but here I am. 3 years later, the issue still remains. After a 10 year hiatus, I am finally making guide postings on forums.

You realize by disabling dht and using those block lists, you are blocking a lot of good peers.

Correct. This is to maximize privacy. However, for the sake of just using proxies, dht can be enabled and blocklists can be ignored. Even encryption can be ignored as well.
If I was to do that then I literally could have just used another torrent client with good native proxy support instead of doing all this.

To each their own.

I've had similar problems with faceless dot me. After setting everything up, I got a "can not connect" message as you mentioned in the beginning of your comment. I use the tor network for basic web privacy, but you can't download torrents that way (you actually can, but eventually they will block you if you do it regularly (clogs the network). I've been trying to find someone who uses both Tixati and Faceless to help me out with this problem, but no luck so far. It's disappointing, because I really like Tixati, but in order to work with others who have dealt with the problem of optimizing for privacy ... well I may need a new torrent client.
