What is the file ext? VLC never fails me but WMP has gotten much better and I use it by default for short videos because of it's fast load.. I use three in total the one I have not mentioned is media player classic. I right click the file and choose which I want to use.
If you are having an issue it might be your codex package, it most certainly could be the problem if you have loaded the wrong one.
